Habitat Huron County Celebrates Key Ceremony in Goderich

On a sunny day in Goderich, Habitat Huron County celebrated the completion of another home with a Key Ceremony — welcoming Lori and her two children as they received the ceremonial keys to their new home.
“It was a record turnout,” says Bill Don, former Board Chair and recent recipient of the King Charles Coronation Medal for exceptional volunteerism. “Our Huron County community really cares about affordable housing.”
The special event attracted neighbours, citizens, Habitat ReStore staff, and elected dignitaries including MPP Lisa Thomson, Mayor Bazinet, and Councillor Petrie.
Executive Director Rob Evans points out there were about 1,000 volunteer hours contributing to this particular build — a sturdy and pleasant single-family home with an attractive front porch and garden.
“The Habitat Huron County Board recognizes our community’s growing need for building many more quality affordable homes,” Rob says, “and we’re preparing to be building more.”
The Board has voted to consider more creative ownership options, to build the housing the community needs, and to partner with businesses and individuals to get it done.
As for what’s next? “Partner, partner, partner,” Rob says. There are many innovative ways to lower the cost of housing in Canada, and partnering with builders, tradespeople, community groups, and families can make it happen.
